'The EOS R employs the same sensor from the EOS 5D Mark IV and boasts a higher resolution output than the EOS R6. The latitude of its full-frame sensor when returning detail to underexposed areas is impressive and ISO 12,800 returns useable images in low light. It’s robustly made, works a treat with EF-mount lenses using the EF to EOS adapter and offers clear viewing via an informative electronic viewfinder. It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea though. It lacks in-body image stabilisation, applies a 1.7x crop to 4K video, and has a single card slot and some questionable ergonomics. These concerns have since been addressed on the EOS R6 and EOS R5.

Launched as Canon’s first full-frame mirrorless interchangeable lens camera with built in EVF, the EOS R features the breakthrough in mount technology for high-speed communication between lens and camera. Dual Pixel Autofocus
Dual Pixel CMOS AF is an autofocus technology in which each effective pixel on the CMOS sensor is able to perform both phase-difference autofocusing and imaging functions and focus speeds as short as approximately 0.05 seconds. As many as 5,655 selectable points is made possible for greater composition freedom when shooting.

Low-light focusing limit of EV-6 at the central focus point is able to focus even in low-light scenarios where it would be difficult for the human eye. The EOS R features Eye Detection AF, which can detect and focus on the subject’s pupil. The function is ideal for portrait shooting, which demands stringent focusing accuracy.

Professional Videography
The EOS R delivers 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels) video recording and spports supports Canon’s proprietary Canon Log log gamma, which has proven results with the Cinema EOS System of video production equipment. Video captured with Canon Log delivers a great degree of freedom during post-shoot editing and processing, and with colour grading, rich video expression can be achieved through subtle details of light and shadow.

The EOS R can display 4K video on external devices through the HDMI terminal. When using Canon Log, the camera can output video with a rich gradation (10-bit output) and a wide colour gamut (next-generation broadcasting standard ITU-R BT.2020).

Operability At Its Best
The camera features a multifunction bar on its back, an EOS-series first, that enables both tap and slide operations, allowing for easy shooting settings and image transmission. The EOS R features a built-in high-resolution electronic viewfinder (EVF) with up to 100% coverage that employs an approximately 3.96-million-dot OLED panel. Combined with such controls as the multifunction bar, a sub-electronic dial on top and the control ring on RF lenses allows users to adjust settings effectively while shooting without having to take their eyes off of their subject.

EF-EOS R Adapter

The standard Mount Adapter EF-EOS R allows EF-S and EF lenses to be used on EOS R cameras seamlessly. Photographers who already have a collection of EF-S or EF optics can invest in the EOS R System confidently, knowing their existing lenses will work as expected.
