Following his successful Surf Skate exhibition in London earlier in the year, Vitor Lopes returns with Love Heart Portraits.
Exibited at the London Photography Show 2023, Vitor Lopes' latest set of photographs are all about love in the most visceral sense, and the concept brought its own logistical difficulties that took time and ingenuity to overcome. The striking final images bring 'head vs heart' to the fore quite literally, and were very much worth the wait. Here's Vitor to take you through the project from start to finish:
Vitor: The Love Heart Portraits idea occurred to than 5 years ago; the goal was to create a love and romance themed project, I decided on creating the human body with a heart head. Earlier this year (2023) I decided to make it happen, I found two talented individuals to pose and started planning, I thought it was an interesting contemporary photography concept.
Using 3D software I designed the Heart mask and sourced a prop maker to make it in a light material we could paint, drill, and cut if needed. The mask is custom measured to fit each specific model body proportions and secured by a thick elastic band with Velcro. This process took about 3 months back and forth fine-tuning the designs.
When I was ready for the studio sessions many delays and scheduling conflicts occurred. Eventually we got into our stride for a total of 6 sessions (3 with each model), It was challenging having to pose without seeing, but the models adapted quickly only removing the Love Heart mask for artistic directions, light set-up changes and tea breaks! Thanks to their experience, body awareness, and quick adaptability the results are true to my original idea.
To print these up to A1 size wall art, museum quality art prints, I rented the Sony A7r5 from my usual photography gear rental company Hireacamera. As always, the customer service was impeccable, the customer account booking system allowed for last minute gear decisions, also the live feedback on the rental cost widget is perfect, the pick-up and returns flawless as always, these are my main factors for being a Hireacamera customer all this time.
Three of the Love heart portraits were exhibited at the London Photo Show 2023 to wonderful positive feedback from visitors and what an experience it was, many thanks to the organizers, the staff who set-up the rooms, the photographers and all who visited.
I want to thank Hireacamera for being an integral part of my journey and congratulate their entire team for winning the Amateur Photographer Good Service Award for the fourth year in a row. Why I am not surprised.
You can purchase the Love Heart Portraits original art online from my web shop. I hope they put a smile on your face.
