Aaron Law is a photographer that excels at a variety of genres – everything from street and landscapes to live music. Following an unfortunate incident in Paris, he was left without a lens for an upcoming project, with very little time to obtain one, so he came to us!
As Aaron explains below, he is a huge fan of The Cure, and was lucky enough to secure press passes for two huge concerts. He opted for the superb Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II to go with his newly purchased a7 IV, and just look at the results. That’s not to say the lens did the heavy lifting, you need extraordinary skill to cover a live gig; you’ve very little light that changes constantly, a busy press pit and very limited time – most live shows will only allow the photographers access to the pit for the first 3 songs.
So let’s learn a bit more about Aaron, his photography and his undying love of The Cure!
My name is Aaron Law and I am an amateur photographer in Coventry mostly focusing on heritage events, architecture and live music!
I bought my Sony a7 IV in the middle of last year and have completed a number of shoots in that time, but then a lifetime ambition was unlocked in December 2022. I was lucky enough to have a couple of photo passes for The Cure on their recent European tour. I had covered a few shows around Europe as a fan (ok, 18 in 9 countries…) but had the amazing opportunity from the band to take photos at Leeds and Wembley on the final week of the tour.
I saw a friend had used Hireacamera before and knew I needed a gear upgrade for such a set of events so got in touch with the team. The process was seamless in quite time-constrained circumstances!
I had a bit of a disaster in the week leading up to the shows as my camera body was stolen in Paris – which I quickly purchased again and lodged an insurance claim! I needed a decent lens and Hireacamera had the 24-70mm 2.8 GM II which seemed perfect for the job. The rental seemed reasonable for over a week of use and I could collect from a nearby store before heading to the show. Chatting through my order with the team was painless and very friendly despite having never rented any gear before!
I popped down to Leamington Spa to collect the lens on the day of the first gig and it was well packaged with easy instructions for sending back too. I had it collected from my home but I could have taken it back to a shop as well had that been easier – there are lots of options.
Show time arrived and I nervously fiddled around with the settings required for an arena show which was something I’d usually only shot from crowds. A few days later it was onto Wembley Arena, an iconic venue for music fans across the world and not somewhere I envisaged taking photos! My 50th Cure show was the first night of 3 and the second night was my photo pass – a very emotional few days. I have travelled across the world following The Cure and have always loved snapping pictures at the barrier but to be stood in the pit with other photographers who I loved the work of was a moment I will cherish.
There isn’t much time to think getting only the first two songs so it was a bit of a blur but, I ran about as quickly as possible to capture each band member delivering the incredible songs as best as I could. The lens did a marvellous job, the only limitation was my skill! It held onto focus far better than my kit lens and allowed a decent amount of light in some gloomy conditions. (Shout out to support band The Twilight Sad!). It was the greatest honour of my life and hopefully some of the photos do justice to the greatest band I have ever seen…
What a story! Thanks so much for tagging us Aaron, we really enjoyed seeing these images and have passed your kind words on to the hire office.
