Customer Case Study

Laura Currie
11th January 2023

We’re always thrilled when our lovely customers tag us online after hiring our kit, we truly enjoy seeing the results you’re all capable of and this occasion is no different! Jen McElroy was good enough to tag us on Instagram following her hire, she has a Canon EOS RP and has been using the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6. On this occasion she decided to upgrade to the Canon RF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM for a low-lit rugby match and the results speak for themselves! Granted the focal length is slightly shorter, but in return you gain a beefier maximum aperture. Plus, the 26.2MP full-frame sensor in the EOS RP allows plenty of cropping in post.

But that’s enough from us, let’s hear from Jen herself:

I’ve been covering local club rugby for the best part of ten years and have enjoyed developing Jamcel Photos as a part-time interest. I’ve grown a lot as a photographer, particularly over the last couple of years, and am now taking opportunities to try new things and explore where photography can take me.

As most sports photographers will know, capturing action shots in low light at this time of year can be a real challenge. I’ve been wanting to try a 70-200mm f2.8 for a number of seasons but never quite made the move because of the cost involved. After upgrading to a mirrorless body (Canon EOS RP) earlier in the year and seeing the positive impact this had on the quality of my images I decided it was time to check out the lens.

The Colchester Sudbury clashes are always highly anticipated, being the derby game of the season, so it seemed like the perfect game to get the most out of the lens hire. Hireacamera had been recommended by the local London Camera Exchange store and since first contacting them their service has been excellent.

Having never hired equipment like this before, the verification checks initially felt like quite a lot but once I’d had the call from the team to discuss everything I was completely reassured. It was really nice to feel they were doing everything they could to make sure I was getting the right kit and they even arranged for it to be delivered a day earlier than originally planned - just to make sure I’d have it for the weekend game.

It took a little while to get used to the lens initially and I think it would take another couple of games to feel as comfortable with it as I do with my current lens (Sigma 70-300 f4-5.6) but I’m so pleased with the final images and can see such a difference compared to previous weeks’ shots. I suspect I will buy my own at some point in the future but for now it’s great to know that I can rely on Hireacamera the next time I need a boost for low-light matches.
